learn very slowly if you need to and be patient with yourself. you need to be disciplined and try to play bach every day. pretty much every big genre of his is essential but the etudes and more importantly ballades, sonatas and scherzi are good to get familiar with. Imo chopin wrote more essential works than the nocturnes. they are fantastic pieces that contain so much musical content. You are definitely missing some beethoven sonatas. What would you define as the pinochle of essential Piano repertoire? I've been working through the Chopin preludes and Mozart sonatas but I guess what I'm trying to ask in this post is: I was thinking perhaps the Clementi sonatinas as an easier start but is there a group of pieces I could learn that I could benefit more from? I feel as if Bach has the most benefit but I often struggle to play motivated while playing Bach as even the easiest of Bach can crush your dreams. All of these sets feel very overwhelming even though for sets like the Inventions and Sinfonias I know I am very technically capable of playing them (phrasing and voicing in Bach is a totally different story) but I feel as if I don't know where to start in my journey of repertoire expansion. When I think of essential repertoire I think of sets like the Bach Inventions and Sinfonias or the Goldberg Variations or for romantic works I think of the Chopin Nocturnes or the Schubert Impromptus.
